Finally one of the most traditional colleges in Brisbane is offering English for Medical Purposes – EMP.

EMP course parallels and supports preparation for the high standards of linguistic competence that students from non-English speaking backgrounds have to achieve in the IELTS and the Occupational English Test (OET) in order to work and study as health professionals in Australia. The course has a practical focus on developing culturally and linguistically appropriate vocabulary, sentence structure, communicative functions including body language and appropriate professional courtesies in the context of professional interactions. In addition, skills in interpreting written and comprehending spoken English in the health setting will be covered.

For students preparing for the OET, the course offers relevant test practice in all four skill areas – speaking, listening, reading and writing – using role plays and other assessment appropriate for the specific OET requirements. To lay the foundation for this, preparation is given in test-taking skills including analysis of questions, and skills to meet OET criteria, such as grammar and summarizing data.

It is strongly recommended that a student should do the EMP course in conjunction with the IELTS course to give them the best chance of success.
